Making Room for Yourself During the Holidays
Updated: 3 days ago
A little less pressure. A little more space for what matters, including you.

The holidays have a way of filling every available space. The calendar fills with gatherings. The house fills with decorations. Your thoughts fill with lists, plans, and reminders of everything you still need to do.
Some of it is lovely. Some of it is tiring. Often, it is both.
You can look forward to the season and still need a break from it. You can enjoy caring for other people and still want someone to notice what you need.
Making room for yourself begins with recognizing that you belong on your own list.
Decide what matters to you this year
Before the season gathers speed, pause and ask yourself: What would make these holidays feel meaningful to me?
Perhaps it is an afternoon with someone you rarely see. Cooking one favorite family recipe. Having a quiet morning at home. Spending within your budget so January feels a little easier. Choose two or three things that matter most. Let those help guide your decisions.
A meaningful holiday does not require you to recreate every tradition, accept every invitation, or make every corner of your home photo-ready. Some years, you have more to give. Other years, keeping things simple is the choice that makes sense.
You are allowed to respond to the life you have this year.
Leave a little room in the calendar
An open afternoon can disappear quickly when you start treating it as available space for everyone else. Before saying yes, give yourself a moment. Consider the preparation, travel, expense, and energy involved, not just the hours of the event itself.
You might say:
“Thank you for thinking of me. I won’t be able to make it this time.”
Or:
“I’d love to come, but I’ll need to leave early.”
You can be warm and clear. You do not need an elaborate explanation.
Keep some time available for resting, catching up, or simply deciding what you feel like doing when the day arrives.
Let one thing be easier
There is usually something on the holiday list that creates more pressure than pleasure.
Maybe it is a complicated meal, an exhausting shopping trip, or a tradition you have continued because you always have.
Choose one thing to simplify. Buy the dessert. Give fewer gifts. Use the decorations you already enjoy. Ask someone else to bring a dish and let them do it their way.
Notice what happens when you release a little of the work. You may have more energy to enjoy the parts you wanted to do in the first place.
Give yourself a small place to land
Taking time for yourself can be easier said than done on an ordinary day, let alone during the holidays. When you are the person keeping everything moving, being told to “take it easy” can leave you thinking, Really? And who is going to do everything that still needs doing?
Sometimes, making room for yourself happens right in the middle of the day you already have. It might mean sitting down to eat lunch instead of taking bites between tasks. Pausing for a few slow breaths before the next errand. Turning up a favorite song in the car and enjoying it along the way.
These moments may not change your list, but they can give you a little relief while you work through it. When there is room for a longer pause, take it. A warm cup of tea by the window. A short walk. A few minutes with your journal before opening your phone.
Let it be simple enough to fit your life. There is no need to turn your quiet time into another project.
If writing helps, try this question:
What do I need a little more of today, and what could I do without?
Allow the season to feel different
The holidays can bring up more than celebration. They can remind us of people we miss, circumstances that have changed, or expectations we cannot meet. You do not have to force yourself into a festive mood. There can be affection and sadness at the same table. Gratitude and fatigue in the same day. You can enjoy a gathering and need quiet afterward.
Give yourself permission to experience the season as it is, rather than how you think you should feel.
One true step
You do not have to change the whole season today. Choose one small way to make room for yourself that respects your time, your energy, and what matters to you.
You belong in the holiday you are working so hard to create.
Steady on.
